General Baldwin was a good officer and did not deserve to be relieved of command. The division recently had to deal with the unauthorized use of Agent Orange resulting in the reassignment of the previous commanding general. Also, during this period William Calley
of My Lai fame and his defense team revisited the division for a week or so and that brought tons of bad publicity on the division even though My Lai had occurred several years before. During this period it was decided by our politicians that the Americal Division would in the future only be referred to as the 23rd Infantry Division. General Baldwin and Colonel Clark ended up being the undeserving fall guys. Still after 40 years have not forgiven the Secretary of the Army.
