Aux Morts de la Commune

The Commune de Paris was the main insurrectionary commune of France, based on direct democracy and established in Paris from 18 March to 28 May 1871. The communards had taken advantage of the siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War to declare a utopian republic, something along the lines of the one seventy years earlier, but hopefully without the tens of thousands of opponents being guillotined this time. When the siege was over. the insurrectionists were brought to this wall by the hundreds and shot, their bodies dumped into conveniently adjacent mass graves.
